In our lives numbers are very important to us...
20 years ago we started our journey through life together.
15 years ago we started growing our beautiful family.
13 years ago we started running together as a way to grow closer to each other and help each other achieve our dreams, goals and aspirations. We completely fell in love with the sport.
12 years ago we ran our very first marathon together, hand in hand. Since then our marathon journey has taken us to 3 continents, 4 countries, and 8 states. Our plan was to continue running together all over the world, but
18 months ago we got word that our lives would be changing in a direction we did not expect.
You see, 1 in 5 people will have serious sight conditions in their lifetime... Sight loss doesn't care who you are, where you are from, what you look like, if you are male or female... Anyone can be effected... and Laine is one of them. She was diagnosed with the beginning stages of Age Related Macular Degeneration at the age of 40 (quite early for AMD). There were many nights full of tears, fears, and holding each other wondering what would be next... There were so many things still left to see, do and accomplish.
So 12 months ago we decided we were going to fight this with everything we've got. Laine went on the recommended vitamins, changed her entire diet, started wearing eye protection any time outside, and adopted a healthier lifestyle in hopes that we will keep the blindness from advancing as long as we can. We made a list of all the things we wanted to see together and marathoning was still on the list. We decided that moving forward, even if Laine does lose her sight, Pat would guide her and we would continue to run.
For a really long time we have been trying to find a charity we felt was a good fit for us. One we could get passionate about... One we felt was important not just for us, but for the masses. We looked at charities at the Tokyo Marathon, Chicago Marathon, Toronto Marathon... None of them were a good fit... Until we started looking into the London Marathon and came across Fight For Sight/Vision Foundation!
Fight for Sight/Vision Foundation help fund ground-breaking research into sight loss of all kinds. The research they do for people suffering from sight loss is ground breaking! For the 1 in 5 people who will suffer from vision loss like Laine, this research instills hope for treatments and cures.
We are proud to be part of such a beautiful team and hope you will join us in support of this worthy cause!
