Story
Hi. Thanks for taking the time to visit my page.
I'm Paul Chatwyn-Ros, and I have two separate, but connected, reasons for attempting to play over 14 hours of golf in one day.
First however, a disclaimer - I know I'm not the first to do this, and I know it doesn't on the face of it seem like a big challenge. But for me, it likely will be.
Back in April of 2024 I was staying in a hotel in the north on a visit to see my father. Me and my wife had taken our young 'un to a soft play there prior to visiting him. As my child was quite young she needed supervision, so I ran around after her in there.
Afterwards, I went to sit down to put my shoes on. I got incredible pain in my back, and was unable to sit. I couldn't drive my family to our hotel. I was eventually stretchered into an ambulance and driven to the local A&E where I spent the next 7 hours. I was eventually told to 'walk home' (which would be a difficult 200 mile+ trek...) and given a prescription for some pain meds.
I have since found out from having scans that I have a herniated disc. My disc is resting on a nerve that travels all the way down my left leg. Since I had the incident, there's been only one day where I haven't been in pain - and that's because I had an injection in my back to numb me!
I have had multiple osteopath, physiotherapy and chiropractic appointments to date. I have improved considerably, but am still in daily pain. And because of this, as of time of writing (27th Nov 24), I haven't hit a single golf ball since April. Anyone who knows me will tell you that's a ridiculously long time for me to not do something I love.
So, walking is painful and bending over is really tough - an ideal combo for golf!
The second part of my story...
My dad was the person who taught me how to play golf since I was 2 years old. From my twenties onwards, it was the main way we bonded. I was lucky enough to go on several golf holidays with him, and I took him to Portugal three years ago to play out there. What I didn't know then was that this would be the last time I would play with him. Due to a combination of issues, including him having cancer (of which he is now happily free of), he is not able to play any more. I really miss being able to share this with him.
So, there's the personal backstory that hopefully gets you invested in this cause!
I can't guarantee what date this will happen (although there's prob only a 2 week window to do it in, in late June/early July 2025). I can't guarantee where I'll do this. And I can't even guarantee who I'll do this with (although Chris Thomas is the first person to come to mind. And if you are in media sales and are interested - do get in touch!). But I guarantee that I will put the work in to get my body to a position where I can do this.
I have also had enough horrible stories with cancer and my family over the last few years that Cancer Research is a cause close to me, so I really appreciate anything you can give to support those guys. I am hoping to raise £100 for every year I've been alive, because er... well it felt like a way to get a target up!
Thank you for reading, and if you do donate or look to take part in this, thank you for that as well.
Paul
