Story

Hi everyone,

As most people are aware, we lost Nan just before Christmas to cancer and the world lost a truly beautiful soul. She'd previously beaten it twice before throughout a life in which she also experienced the loss of her daughter Maria at 39 years old and the passing of her husband Maurice in 2008 (also to cancer). Just any one of those things happening at any time is devastating and enough to make anyone question their faith and life in general.

Not Rene Power.

The strength and courage she displayed throughout her life inspired everyone and no matter the setback she faced, she overcame them all whilst wearing a massive smile on her face and you could hear that laugh of hers over any pain she had.

Since Nan's passing, I've found it difficult to process the enormous loss she's left in our lives but reflecting on her life over the last couple of weeks, I wanted to do something in her honour. To really capture the spirit, generosity and kindness she was loved for by so many people. She was an incredibly charitable lady and she got more happiness out of life giving back to others.

So, it is my turn to give back in memory of both my Nan and Grandad. On Sunday 23rd March 2025, I am running the Liverpool Half Marathon on behalf of Marie Curie Woolton, a charity whose nurses provided my Nan with the loving care and dignity that she deserved towards the end of her life. Even during such a horrible time, the kindness and respect they treated our family with has not been lost on me and I'll never forget how amazing they were.

I've ran and completed half-marathons before when I was younger. I won't lie to you, the idea of running a half-marathon now scares me but no matter how painful it gets, it pales into absolute insignificance to fighting cancer. If I can assist in any small way to help other people in overcoming this godforsaken disease, I'm going to do it. For Nan and Grandad.

Any donations, no matter how much, are greatly appreciated by all of Rene's family.

Thank you all for reading 💙

Paul
