Story
My beautiful niece was diagnosed with "Rett Syndrome" shortly after her 1st Birthday. Rett Syndrome is an incredibly rare genetic disorder that affects brain development, resulting in severe physical disability. So, unlike many children, she has grown up without the power to walk, talk, and do some of the things that young ones enjoy and love. She communicates with the use of her Tobii Eye Gaze.
For several years, I have tried to participate in the London Marathon; however, each year I receive the same email: "you have not been selected on this occasion." I began to think this was a sign telling me that I needed to do more for my niece with this effort. With a bit of encouragement from two close friends, we have decided to take on an Ultra Marathon. Not just any ultra marathon; we are attempting to complete 100 miles (160 km) from Edinburgh Castle to Glamis Castle in 24 hours.
They say if you want to get to know someone, walk a mile in their shoes; well, Sofia would give absolutely everything just to walk one step in my shoes. The funds raised will go towards an amazing chair that can transition straight from the car to off-road and bring a little more comfort to her world. This chair will hopefully bring a smile to her beautiful face, which often tries to hide the pain she endures.
The Rat Race 100 Ultramarathon is scheduled for July 25th, 2026, so I am currently in training mode, having only ran a half marathon back in 2021.
You all have plenty of time to donate for such a beautiful and inspiring young lady. Thank you for taking the time to read this; I will send occasional updates on how things are going.
