Story
A little over seven years ago, my sister Bethany died by suicide. Grief is a tough road for any family but it hit my family especially hard. We lost a sister, an aunt, a daughter and a truly beautiful soul.
We all deal with loss differently. One thing that helped me was talking. It's important to me that we use uncomfortable words like suicide and give each other space to be vulnerable and air out our most uncomfortable thoughts. Maybe in a world where that is normalised, we will see fewer tragedies at the hands of suicide.
So I started volunteering, first for HopeLine North Carolina, then for Norwich Samaritans.
Norwich Samaritans is one of several call centres around the UK offering a light in the dark for those who need it most. Every day, extraordinary people are taking phone calls, emails and online chats with people who may have nobody else to turn to. Its work is crucial and it's why I'm proud to volunteer for them.
It's also why I'm going to do something a bit different this summer.
On 24th July, I'm going to run 83 miles along the Norfolk Coast from Hunstanton down to Hopton-on-Sea. It's going to be a long, and at times lonely, slog. But I'll be doing it in memory of my sister, knowing that the money raised for Norwich Samaritans will make a difference to those who need the non-judgmental emotional support that we offer.
