Paula's fundraiser for My Mito Mission

Paula Hargreaves is raising money for My Mito Mission

AJ Bell Great Manchester Run 10K 2026 · 31 May 2026 ·

Our missions are run by families affected by mitochondrial disease, mito for short. MILLIONS in the UK have illnesses which also involve mitochondrial damage - diabetes, MS, stroke, some cancers & many more. More research into mitochondrial disease could help so many, not just those with mito.

Story

I’m taking on the Great Manchester 10K with my sighted guide to raise awareness and funds for mitochondrial disease research and support.

Mitochondrial disease, is a rare genetic condition that affects the body’s ability to produce energy. Mitochondria are the energy cells found in almost every cell in the body, so when they fail, it can affect multiple organs including the eyes, heart, muscles and brain. Some forms of mitochondrial disease are life-limiting, and tragically some children do not survive beyond early childhood. There is currently no cure or treatment.

I was diagnosed three years ago with mitochondrial disease, after suddenly losing the central vision in my left eye. Since then, the condition has affected my eyesight, heart, muscles, hearing and energy levels. Simple daily tasks can feel like climbing a mountain for people with the condition.

For many people, a 10K is just a run. For me, even getting to the start line is a huge challenge. I will be running with my cousin Angela, who is also my sighted guide and biggest support.

I’m proud to be running for My Mito Mission to help raise awareness of this devastating disease and to support other families living with mito. Every step I take is for those who are battling this condition every day.

If you can, please donate, or even share this post on your social media, or share it within your workplace to help spread awareness of mitochondrial disease it will be appreciated . The more people who understand this condition, the bigger difference we can make together.

Thank you for your support.
