Story
Most of you will know that I personally have been affected by Meningitis. Having contracted bacterial meningitis in March 2012, I am acutely aware of how quickly it can take over your body, how debilitating it can be, and how fortunate I was to make a full recovery because in the consultant's own words, "if I had gone to sleep I never would've woken up."
However, my most recent fundraising efforts are not solely about my experience. My son, Jesse at just 1 week old, contracted viral meningitis. Luckily, we were already in the hospital because I had been readmitted with a nasty virus (presumably the same one that Jesse had). When I realised something was off with him, we were dealt with extremely quickly. He had to endure 4 lumbar punctures and spent 5 days in hospital recovering.
Meningitis can affect anyone, of any age, anywhere which is why it's crucial to recognise the symptoms and understand that they can manifest differently in babies. Trust your gut and act fast!
I'm running the Great North Run in September 2026 to raise funds for Meningitis Research Foundation. I've also decided to cycle the width of the USA (4200ish miles) by the end of the year.
I haven't run this far since before having kids, and I've never cycled this far, so I know it will be challenging but I've never had a stronger 'why' so I'll dig deep if you can too! Your support will fund vital research and awareness initiatives and it means the world to me and my family!
