Story
When my friend Claire was diagnosed with breast cancer, I thought supporting her would mean saying the right things, staying positive, and being strong for her.
What I learned instead is that support looks much quieter. It’s sitting next to someone when there are no words. It’s sending messages that say “I’m here” without expecting a reply. It’s letting them cry without trying to fix the pain.
I learned that I couldn’t carry her fear for her, but I could make sure she never felt alone in it. It’s been much easier than I expected to support Claire, because she has been so positive throughout, and I thank God that her cancer journey is going in the right direction. Sometimes the most loving thing you can do is simply stay — even when you feel helpless.
This experience taught me that real friendship isn’t about being inspiring or brave. It’s about being present, imperfect, and consistent. A significant portion of the population either lives with a diagnosis or has lost a loved one to this disease, and many of us have been affected in ways we never imagined.
I am competing in the London Big Half Marathon to help fund research into breast cancer and all forms of cancer. Please help me make a difference by donating to my fundraiser.
