Story

Peace is a Fire - Public Meditation Organised by Brixton Buddhist Centre

Brixton is vibrant, energetic, loud, and beautiful, but it is rarely calm and peaceful.

On 25th July 2026, the 12 of us from the Brixton Buddhist Centre’s Year 1 Study Group are stepping out of the shrine room and onto the concrete. We are staging a Flash Meditation right in the beating heart of busy Windrush Square, central Brixton, where we will run a meditation session for three (3) hours.

Meditating in a public space is incredibly challenging, especially for this long. We won’t have the comfort of a Buddhist Centre, incense, or quiet. Instead, we will be sitting with the discomfort of sirens, shouting, traffic, and the unpredictable energy of a London morning. Everything from curious children, birds, hooting vehicles and busy public; The challenge is to sit motionless with eyes closed, regardless of what’s happening in the world around us, engaging our minds with meditations on loving kindness (Metta Bhavana).

We are doing this to prove a point to ourselves, and and anyone else who passes by, that even in the busiest places, each person can find their own center of calm and peace, for the benefit of everyone around them.

This isn't a political statement or a protest. It is an attempt to inspire kindness and bring calm to our community. We are inspired by our founder's words “Peace is a fire.”

It’s important to realise that there is nothing passive about peace, or peaceful activity, but see it as a vibrant force which transforms people, situations and environments.

Why we need your support:

We are putting ourselves in the middle of the chaos to raise vital funds needed to take on the lease and running of the 21Effra building in central Brixton, and to establish a permanent home for the Brixton Buddhist Centre.

Brixton needs a sanctuary. Our vision is to transform our new venue into a permanent space of profound calm and tranquility that belongs to the whole community.

The centre is already a community hub, providing:

--->A place of genuine friendship and belonging.

---> Meditation Classes by donation: Giving everyone access to mental clarity, stress relief, and a sense of meaning regardless of their financial situation.

---> Ethics & Wisdom Training: Workshops and retreats designed to help people navigate modern life with more clarity, compassion, and emotional resilience.

Now we need your help to turn this run-down community hall into a place fit for purpose. A beautiful haven amidst the chaos and nihilism of modern living.

Your generosity right now will lay the foundations for the Dharma, The Buddha’s path of self-discovery and altruistic activity, to flourish in south London for decades to come.

How You Can get involved

There are three ways you can back us:

1)---> Donate: Every pound you give helps us take a step to renovating and transforming Brixton’s new sanctuary. Whether it’s £5 or £500, you will be making the difference to many peoples lives In south London. We can't do this without your financial support.

**For every donation over £65 you will receive a specialised event T-shirt OR tote bag (We will contact you to decide) commemorating the Brixton ‘Building a Buddhaland’ project (To be collected at Brixton Buddhist Centre).

2)---> Join Us on the Cushion: If you are in London, please come down as well! You don’t have to be an experienced meditator or sit for the full 3 hours. Just turn up anytime between 9-12pm and sit with us. We will encourage all participants to rotate in 30 minute sessions with 10 minute leg stretches before returning to the mat. The more people inhabiting that space of peace, the more powerful and inspiring it will be.

3)---> Come Say Hi: Curious but don't want to meditate? We will have dedicated "spotters" on hand. They will be there to chat with curious public, answer questions, and protect the space so the meditators can remain undisturbed.

Thank you so much for your generosity, your encouragement, and your inspiration. Together we can spread peace and calm like a wild fire in Brixton.

With Metta,

The Year 1 Brixton Study Group
