We provide information, advice and advocacy to people with Pectus malformations. We raise awareness and funds to improve standards of care. We support research into the causes, prevention and treatment of Pectus malformations and provide support to those accessing treatment in the UK.

Story

On the 7th October 2025, I underwent life-changing surgery that has resolved years of negative body image, restricted lung and heart capacity, and chest pain that I have carried with me my whole life 🩻

Pectus Excavatum is a congenital condition that affects 1 in 1000 children. It is even rarer in females, being four times more common in boys. The severity of my condition was classified as severe, with my sternum pressing into my lungs and heart. On the Haller Index, anything above >3.25 is considered severe, mine was 5.14. This caused significant breathing difficulties and contributed to a heart murmur due to pressure on the right side of my heart.

Under the RESTORE trial, which exists to prove to the NHS that this procedure is so much more than cosmetic, I have had not one, or two, but THREE titanium bars inserted in my sternum, to correct my chest wall and give my lungs and heart the space they need to function correctly. James Cook University Hospital looked after me with the upmost care during my time there, the work the staff do there is truly remarkable. 6 months into my recovery I cannot begin to explain the differences I feel in my quality of life.

I don’t think I have all the words to describe how grateful I am for the RESTORE trial and the incredible work of Dr Dunning and the research team. They have given me back the confidence I lost in my appearance throughout my teenage years, alongside a significant improvement in my overall health as a result of undergoing this procedure. Before the surgery, my life felt restricted in so many ways. Having the Nuss procedure has truly given me a new lease of life and the ability to do everything to the best of my ability -starting with fundraising for a charity that is so close to my heart (no pun intended).

Pectus Matters is a charity aimed at supporting individuals with the condition, with support, resources & access to the best treatments. Where the NHS has placed challenges for individuals with the condition to receive appropriate treatment, Pectus Matters helps fill gaps in support and campaign for better access nationally. If you are able to, I’d be so grateful for any donations towards my training for this marathon.

So to my ten year old self who never thought this would be possible, this is for you❤️‍🩹
