Story

On Monday 28th September, a team of patients and staff from the Spinal Unit at Salisbury Hospital will be pedaling 242 miles virtually, the distance from Salisbury District Hospital to Blackpool Sports Centre, to raise funds to help our Spinal Unit Team get to the WheelPower Inter Spinal Unit Games 2026.

We are looking to raise £500 to help fund the teams transportation to the games and their kit.

6 Salisbury Hospital spinal patients, ages ranging from 20 - 70, will be taking part in the Games, which will be held in October. These individuals have all sustained spinal chord injuries within the past 18 months and sport has been a major contribution to their rehabilitation.

Alice Heaven

I spent a short amount of time in Salisbury for my rehab, I heard about the Inter Spinal Games through David whilst chatting in the garden and I thought it would be a fabulous opportunity to get back into sporting activities.

Dave Calloway

I had my accident in Scotland in July 2025. The Inter Spinal Unit Games is a fantastic opportunity for me to get involved, gain insight into what the future may hold, and learn more about the opportunities available as a wheelchair user. I have always been an active person with a keen interest in sport, so attending the Games would be a huge achievement. It would also give me the chance to meet new people, challenge myself, and proudly represent Salisbury.

A year after sustaining a T10 spinal cord injury, I’m excited to be competing at the Inter-Unit Games. Sport has been a huge part of my recovery, giving me a new challenge and a new purpose. I’m looking forward to testing myself, competing alongside others, and seeing how far I’ve come since leaving rehab. For me, it’s about pushing my limits, embracing every opportunity, and proving that life after a spinal cord injury can still be full of ambition and adventure. Plus.. it’d be pretty cool to be a Paralympian and you’ve got to start somewhere!

Alex Phillips

My name is Alex, and I am currently studying Sports and Exercise Science at Loughborough University. Before my spinal injury, I competed in Ironman triathlons and sport was a huge part of my life. Attending the Spinal Games would give me the opportunity to reconnect with sport, discover new adaptive sports, and challenge myself again in a competitive environment. I hope the Games will help me rebuild my confidence, meet others with similar experiences, and take the first steps towards getting back into sport and living an active lifestyle once again.

Jericho Hasieber

Hi, my name is Jericho and on the 23rd September 2025 i had a collision with a deer on a dual carriageway that then caused an L3 burst fracture. This led to me being partially paralysed below the waist. I would love to attend the spinal games as a way to connect with other people in a similar position to me. It will also allow me to try a variety of new sports that i might not otherwise be able to have tried such as wheelchair rugby and wheelchair badminton which both require specialised, expensive custom wheelchairs.

Ali Houston

Since sustaining my spinal cord injury in May 2025, I have wanted to continue to be as physically active as possible as I was active before my injury, playing tennis 2 to 3 times a week, visiting the gym, and Power walking. Whilst these activities are not available to me at the moment being a tetra, I am keen to try as many sports as possible to see what now works for me. Being active not only helps me physically but mentally as well. These games will be a challenge that I’m looking forward to taking on, working together as a team and competing with other teams.
