To the Albert Hall (on a penny farthing?)

Cat Johnston is raising money for Derwent Brass

Penny Farthing Century Ride · 12 July 2026

We advance & encourage the study & performance of brass instruments, whilst educating the public in the appreciation of brass band music via live shows, etc. In addition we support other charitable organisations and the community through initiatives such as fundraising concerts & brass workshops.

Story

On Sunday 12th July, i will be completing a 100 mile bike ride. However this won't just be a normal century ride.... I will be pedalling all that way on my penny farthing! One gear (the wheel) no freewheeling and a long way off the ground.

Apart from fuelling my curiosity and keeping life interesting, I'm keen to raise some funds for two worthy causes. Derwent Brass & Sport for Mind. (There will be two pages to separate the donations.)

For the first time ever, Derwent Brass (Derbyshire's premier Brass Band) have qualified for the national finals in the Royal Albert Hall, London. For those of you not familiar with brass banding, it's just like Brassed Off! On Saturday 3rd October we will be performing & competing alongside 20 of the best championship section brass bands in the country. It's a huge achievement for the band and we need help getting there. The entry fee, accommodation and travel all adds up.

My other charity is 'Sport in Mind.' A charity that is working alongside the NHS to transform the nation's mental health through sport and physical activity. I've had my own mental health battles in the past and sport allows me to feel strong, stay connected with others and keeps my head in a good place.

Please give if you are able, and I'll keep on training in the meantime!
