Peter Martyn Angwin passed away peacefully on 12th August 2026, aged 79, after a long illness. In Peter's memory, his family are collecting donations for Pipe Up for Pipe Organs, a charity which saves pipe organs from demolition, relocates organs under threat, and celebrates organs and organ music within wider British musical and cultural heritage.

The pipe organ was Peter's most dear and enduring musical passion throughout his life. He learned to play from a young age and continued playing long into adulthood, sharing his passion with friends and family over many decades.

As organist, Peter played at concerts, weddings, funerals, and services of all kinds across the country. He was even regular organist at Arborfield Army Garrison, performances which required a military flair! In his later years, while no longer playing, Peter continued to pursue a passion for the pipe organ, attending recitals with his wife Jeanette at churches and cathedrals across the UK, after which he'd occasionally offer his fellow organists some constructive feedback!

To Peter, it mattered little whether it was a grand concert hall organ, a church organ, or a theatre Wurlitzer-style organ. He enjoyed them all for their individual characteristics, their long-standing contribution to British musical heritage, and for their special ability to bring joy to listeners and organists alike.

Pipe Up for Pipe Organs is a charity created in 2022 to save British pipe organs from neglect and destruction. An estimated five pipe organs go to landfill every week, and many sit silent and unused through lack of repair and maintenance.

The charity helps advise and restore organs which are underused. It finds neglected organs new homes and relocates organs into public spaces where they can be celebrated by new audiences. The charity also promotes pipe organs and organ music to wider audiences in the hope of revitalising public interest and saving Britain's organ heritage from disappearing.
