Story

Please see Chris Waddle's story:

Working night shifts on the M6, I often brushed off chest pains as mere heartburn. But one night, the pain was so intense that I had to take a break, and it left me in cold sweats. A few weeks later, the pain returned while I was at home. My partner urged me to call an ambulance, and I did. The paramedics discovered I was experiencing a heart attack and rushed me to the hospital. There, they found it was a rare condition called Takotsubo syndrome, which bruised my heart.

I thought I was recovering well until a Thursday morning when I suddenly collapsed in my kitchen. I later learned my partner's quick CPR and the paramedics’ efforts brought me back after a cardiac arrest. When I came to, I was grateful to find my mind intact.

While recovering in the hospital, I collapsed again. Thanks to the swift response of the amazing team at Freeman's Hospital Cardiology Department, they identified a heart spasm and treated it with a stent and a defibrillator under my skin.

After eight months of recovery and the support of my beloved family, I returned to work. I am forever thankful to the staff at Freeman's Hospital for their exceptional care. This experience taught me the value of paying attention to health warnings and cherishing each day—a lesson in resilience that I hold dear.

Our team is preparing to embark on the walk from Glenridding to Old Bridge, surrounded by the stunning landscapes of the Lake District, with a heartfelt mission: to raise funds for Freeman's Hospital, the place that saved Chris's life. We will set out on September 27th, filled with both excitement and purpose.

The journey will be enriched by beautiful scenery, with each step serving as a reminder of our gratitude for the amazing care Chris received. The team will be driven by personal stories, shared laughter, and the belief in supporting a cause that truly matters.

When we reach Old Bridge, we will feel a great sense of accomplishment. This walk is not just about covering miles but about giving back to the hospital that made such a difference for Chris, ensuring they can continue their incredible work for others in need. Together, we aim to prove that community and compassion can lead to meaningful change.
