Story
This summer, to celebrate 15 years of The Wave Project, our team is taking on "15 Peaks of Summer". Each team member will climb 15 peaks between 1 July and 31 August, raising funds to support young people’s mental health. From city hills to local fells and iconic Munros, each peak is a personal challenge. Celebrating the outdoors, pushing ourselves, and marking The Wave Project’s milestone anniversary. Our aim is to raise £15,000 as a team, with every donation helping provide surf therapy and mental health support to young people who need it most. This is more than a challenge. It’s a celebration of achievement, adventure, and the difference we can make together. Every peak climbed brings us closer to changing lives of young people
This is where I come in, my names Pete and I joined The Wave Project when I moved to Scotland 2 years ago. I’ve been a surfer since I was 13 and a surf instructor for 7 years. As well as surfing I love hiking up mountains. If I’m not surfing, you will usually find me hiking up a Munro (a mountain in Scotland over 3000 feet/914 metres). When I saw that Wave Project had set up the 15 Peaks Challenge, I knew I had to do something to get involved. So, what’s the plan?
Being in Scotland it felt only right that we do something big as we have some of the best and biggest mountains in the UK. Plans started to come together with friends and the idea to hike the 15 highest mountains in Scotland came to be, but to make it a real big challenge, we’re planning to do it over 7 days. The aim is to cover around 145km and climb over 9500 metres over the course of the 7 days, summitting the 15 highest mountain peaks back-to-back. This will involve a lot of driving between mountain ranges in the Scottish Highlands starting in Kintail in the north, before heading to the Cairngorms, circling to the Nevis range via Ben Lawers on Loch Tay, finishing on Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak. If we are feeling up to it, we may even bag a few extra summits along the way. I’m really looking forward to the challenge; I love the hills of Scotland and can’t wait to push myself further than I have before in the mountains. Since being in Scotland, I’ve climbed over 100 Munros and this challenge will add another 10 new summits to that list.
This isn’t a solo effort either. My friend, fellow surfer and fellow Wave Project volunteer (also another Cornishman in Scotland), Cam, is joining me for the challenge.
Hi, I’m Cam and I joined the Wave Project this year. I’ve surfed since I was young, but after a few years out due to injury I’ve loved being back in the water. I moved to Scotland in 2025 and met Pete in the ocean. After learning more about the Wave Project and the importance of physical activity for wellbeing, I was eager to get involved. I completed my volunteer training back in February and will be volunteering from now on. Alongside surfing, I love the outdoors and spending time in the mountains, so when Pete mentioned a week-long expedition to raise money for such a great cause, I was immediately keen to join.
We are hoping that friends, Wave Project volunteers and anyone involved in the Wave Project will be able to join us on some of the mountains over the course of the 7 days.
We are doing this because I love being involved in the Wave Project and I hope I can help to raise some money for such a great charity. I’ve seen firsthand the benefits of surfing, both for myself and for the young people who take part. I believe in the benefits of surfing, and I think that time spent outdoors — whether in the surf or walking up hills — never fails to make me feel better. The physical challenge combined with being immersed in nature is so beneficial. Nothing makes me feel better than surfing or hiking, and that’s something I love to share.
I couldn’t recommend signing up to the 15 Peaks Challenge enough. Not just to raise money for a good cause, but also for yourself. You don’t need to climb anything huge — just get out there and climb your local hill. It also doesn’t need to be back-to-back or anything crazy, just get out there if you can and hopefully you’ll have a great time.
