Story
This challenge is in memory of a beautiful little girl, Lyla Story, who tragically lost her life at just two years of age on 3rd May 2025 due to undiagnosed type 1 diabetes.
Her death was not inevitable—it was preventable. And that is what makes it so deeply heartbreaking.
I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1956, at almost exactly the same age as Lyla. Her story has affected me deeply. It has made me reflect on how incredibly fortunate I have been to live such a full life—and how unfair it is that little Lyla never had that chance.
Lyla’s family, alongside many from the incredible T1D community, are working tirelessly to ensure her short life leaves a lasting legacy. They are raising awareness, pushing for changes in thr law, seeking earlier and safer diagnosis, and working to ensure others, especially Health Care Professionals, recognise the signs before it’s too late.
Type 1 diabetes is a relentless and complex condition. It demands constant attention, careful judgement, and the precise use of insulin—a potentially dangerous, but life-saving drug that must be managed with great care. What makes it even more dangerous is how easily it can be missed. People can look and seem completely well, even when their blood sugars are well out of range. Perhaps this is why some people feel T1D in a simple condition to manage. Awareness matters: it saves lives!
This challenge also marks my 70th year of living with type 1 diabetes. I hope my journey offers hope and encouragement to those newly diagnosed—but more than anything, I want to help prevent another family experiencing the devastating loss that Lyla’s has endured.
Please support me in this challenge and share if you can. Reaching £2000 would mean so much, but what matters most is making a real difference. By making a donation and sharing this post, you will help raise awareness, deepen understanding, and ultimately save lives.
Thank you so much for your kindness and support, it means so much to me.
With thanks and kindest wishes,
Pete Davies
