The Comrades Marathon 2025 · 8 June 2025

Children and adults with Down’s syndrome are all unique individuals with their own personalities, family backgrounds and preferences that make them who they are. We aim to create the conditions that all people with Down’s syndrome need to live full and rewarding lives.

Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On Sunday 8th June I will be running The Comrades Marathon in South Africa, and raising money for the Down's Syndrome Association.

The Comrades Marathon is an ultramarathon of approximately 88 kilometres (55 miles) which is run annually between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. It is the world's largest and oldest ultramarathon. The direction of the race alternates each year between the "up" run starting from Durban and the "down" run starting from Pietermaritzburg. This year is a "down run". There is a strict 12 hour cut off time for all runners, and if you'd like to know more about the event, there is a link below.

My nephew, Lewis, has Down’s Syndrome and he, along with his Mum, Claire, have inspired me to raise money for the Down's Syndrome Association, who aim to enable people with Down's Syndrome to live full and rewarding lives. Lewis and Claire can convey the importance of the charity's work far better than I can.

Lewis:

"Becki at Downs Syndrome Workfit helped me to get a paid job at Dunelm. It's a great place to work, and the staff are brilliant."

Claire:

"We recently found ourselves in a very challenging situation with Lewis's supported living. The DSA Social Care Advisor has been amazing, going above and beyond in providing advice and information. Without vital funding, this kind of hands-on support from the DSA would not be possible."

Lewis loves his sport, and has competed in the Special Olympics. We often go for a run together when we see each other, and it's these times I'll be thinking about for extra motivation when Comrades becomes particularly painful (which it will).

We will be grateful for any donations you are able to make, and all money raised will go directly to the charity. (My Comrades trip is 100% self-funded!).

(Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure, and your details are safe; they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails).
