Story
I have recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and the last three months have been some of the most challenging and traumatic times of my life. Thankfully, my cancer is currently at a low level and contained, so no immediate treatment has been recommended. However, this situation remains uncertain and could change in the coming months.
My journey began unexpectedly during a visit to my GP for a chest infection. A nurse reviewing my records discovered a high PSA reading from 2022 that I had never been informed about. The following weeks were filled with stress as I underwent further PSA tests, an MRI scan, and a biopsy. This process took a heavy toll on my mental health, especially as the care I received was not what I had hoped for. Entering a hospital should bring comfort and support, but instead, I left feeling traumatized.
Amidst this difficult time, one shining light has been the incredible support from Prostate Cancer UK. Their nurses have been just a phone call away—answering all my questions patiently and providing calm reassurance throughout this ordeal. Their empathy and unconditional care have meant the world to me; knowing they are always there to support me has made all the difference.
I was originally signed up to walk 100km along the Thames Path in September 2026 as part of the Thames Path Ultra Challenge 2026 event. Unfortunately, recent events have prevented me from training properly—I’ve barely left the house—but I feel compelled now more than ever to give back to this wonderful charity that has supported me so much.
This challenge will be tough for me; I won’t be breaking any records, but it’s something I must do to show my gratitude and help others facing similar battles. To all men reading this: please get your PSA tested regularly and seek early treatment if needed—it can save lives.
