Story

I've decided to give a copy of my latest book:

Lent at St Anselm’s: A tale of music, mystery, and vegan cookery in a cathedral city.

to people who make a donation to Friends of Canterbury Cathedral.

Just before Lent Eleanor Foster, a retired music teacher, moves into St Anselm’s, a medieval almshouse in the cathedral city of Wiltonbury. The move is forced on her when the end of her part-time job coincides with a huge rise in the rent on her Soho flat, but she enjoys getting to know her new city. The Warden asks her to form a choir to sing in the hospital’s chapel, and she soon makes friends who share her interest in food and music. But not everyone is welcoming. Follow Eleanor and get to know her friends as they go through the challenges and trials of Lent to the joy of Easter morning.

Previous readers said:

“I must say how much I have enjoyed your novel. It really has gripped me and ended too soon!

“a delightful story and told in a delightful style

The reviewer for "Transforming Ministry" wrote:

"My initial reaction to this book was that it was surely unpromising territory for a novel – but it rapidly grew on me, and my fears were assuaged. It could, in fact, become a kind of ‘cult classic’ – a guide to Anglo-Catholic Lenten observance disguised as a detective-style mystery set in medieval alms houses in a Cathedral city – Barbara Pym meets Dorothy L Sayers in the ‘woke’ culture of the 2020s."

"The author clearly has a profound knowledge of church history and architecture, high church liturgy and vegan cookery which he freely shares with his readership."

About the Charity

As well as being the Mother Church of the Anglican Communion and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Canterbury Cathedral is the local church community to which I belong. It costs £30,000 per day to enable this historic building to welcome visitors, pilgrims and worshippers, and it receives no funding from the State and very little from the Church of England.

The Friends of Canterbury Cathedral described themselves as “the Cathedral's fan club, a group of like-minded people who admire the building, its history and the community which surrounds it.” They work together to preserve it, and, with the great generosity of our membership, contribute financially to many vital projects.
