My “Crazy MND Commute” on two small wheels for Julie and Rob, and all the many other families affected by this devastating disease……
My challenge is to cycle from the Affinity Water depot (Rob’s work place) in Stevenage (Hertfordshire) to Ezra’s cafe situated in a small town in Spain called Pinoso (my brothers home), whilst carrying my own luggage. The total commute will be approximately 1300 miles on a folding bike.
I’m supporting Rob, a good friend and colleague of over 20 years, and his wife Julie. In May of last year Julie received an MND diagnosis leaving the entire family devastated.
When Rob first mentioned the diagnosis to me over a coffee in Sainsbury’s, the emotional enormity of it really struck a chord within me. Rob is one of life’s great guys for whom nothing is too much trouble. He has continually given me and his team immense support on a daily basis, without hesitation.
In some way I wanted to repay his kindness and so I decided to help the only way I knew how…..ride my bike! Like so many of us, I’d seen all the astonishing fundraising efforts of Rob Burrow’s and Kevin Sinfield on the BBC, and felt massively inspired to do something too.
So training is now underway and going well, and I intend to set off from Stevenage in mid April 2026. I estimate it will take me around 22 days to complete this challenge, and you will be able to track my journey live - link to follow nearer the time.
All you have to do to be amazing is to please sponsor my “crazy commute”, and help me to raise all we can for the MNDA.
Many thanks
Phil
