Story
In June 2026, I will be completing a 550 mile bike ride between the 3 centres of the Fire Fighters Charity in the UK - from the Lake District, down to Devon, then across to Littlehampton.
Although the ride will be solo, my amazing Dad will be coming along as my 'support crew'!
I have chosen to raise funds for the Fire Fighters Charity not only because they are there to support those of us who work in an Emergency Service (and their families), but also because I have personally experienced the amazing work they do, and wanted to give something back and to raise awareness.
My 'story':
I'm definitely not one to share things like this with everyone normally, but if it resonates with one person out there then it is worth sharing, so here goes..........
I have a long running struggle with my mental health (this is not something that I have said publicly before!), which for me involves stress, anxiety and depression, with the highs and lows being exaggerated by the ongoing battles in my head.
After reaching an all time low in 2016, feeling ovewhelmed and at rock bottom both mentally and emotionally, I reached out for professional help, and I can honestly say that it was the best thing I ever did! I was lucky that the shock of the situation I was in made me realise that I needed some external help, but I also appreciate that others may not have this realisation themselves.
Recognising the signs that someone (including ourselves) might be going down a 'dark path' or already at the end of it are so important. They may not want your help, or even realise they need it, but knowing where to signpost someone to get help is a great place to start.
Fast forward to joining the Fire Service in 2018, I started to learn about the Fire Fighters Charity and the various ways they support those within it's care, understanding that they are not just about helping those who are struggling physically, but also mentally.
I have utilised their therapy and wellbeing services on a number of occasions now, and having the support of therapists and programmes run by professionals (alongside the amazing support of a caring and understanding wife!) have been invaluable in my journey - one which I know will be ongoing, but I feel a bit better equipped to deal with knowing I have the support there when needed!
But enough about me, please read more about the work that the Fire Fighters Charity do with my short summary and by visiting their website - www.firefighterscharity.org.uk.
How the Fire Fighters Charity can help:
The Fire Fighters Charity provides care and support to Firefighters, control staff, and all those working in (or retired from) the UK's fire services. It's also there for their loved ones.
Its timely health care, wellbeing support and practical assistance helps the UK's fire heroes adapt to physical and emotional injuries, illness and conditions, be fit for work, transition to life after their service and to feel valued and recognised.
They are always ready to help when their community needs them - the Charity is always there for the fire family when they need it!
