Story
This page is to raise funds in memory of Phil Starkey for Cancer Research UK. The progress in treating cancer gave us 10 more years with Phil, which he filled with as much love and laughter as he could.
To encourage people to donate, I will be cycling over 450 miles in honour of my Dad between his 2 favourite beaches from Cornwall to Suffolk; where he holidayed as a child, and where we holidayed when I was a child (and still do). The schedule for my route is below - whoever you are, if I'm passing by, do get in touch!
Thurs Aug 22nd: Day 1 - Polly Joke Beach to Shaldon through Dartmouth
Fri Aug 23rd: Day 2 - Shaldon to Semley (near Shaftesbury)
Sat Aug 24th: Day 3 - Semley to High Wycombe
Sun Aug 25th: Day 4 - High Wycombe to Witham through central London
Mon Aug 26th: Day 5 - Witham to Dunwich through Colchester
The cycle is named after Dad's blog, which I know helped many, and the route has been designed to visit places important to my dad and to my memory of him. Starting at Polly Joke beach in Cornwall, where Dad used to go camping and often revisited, taking me and Will. We have a few special holiday memories in Devon, including cycling a stretch near Teignmouth after Dad's transplant and managing to get away to Dartmouth a year ago. I will make sure to pick up a few nice buns from Gay's Creamery in Dawlish, Dad! Passing Shaftesbury - another special holiday memory, I will try to find the pub we played Hero Quest in. Somewhere between Newbury and Reading, I will revisit the area Dad and I camped around to be on call to rescue Will from Reading festival in case he had an accident with his Bog-in-a-bag! I will then pop to see his brothers in London and Witham, stopping along the way to see Dad's fishes in Postman's Park in central London - an oasis for him whilst in hospital at Barts. I will then probably pass through Colchester, where we lived for over 20 years, and then the calming and lovely Long Melford, where we moved to in 2018. Finally, I will end at Dunwich heath - we spent so much time there as a family with the caravan, away from computers, internet, and phone signal - it's a special place for us. Apart from the massive nuclear power station.
