Cycling to Zurich · 12 June 2024

Protect Earth buys land, and works with existing land owners, to create woodlands, wetlands, and wildflower meadows. We also restore existing habitats, rejuvinate mismanaged woodlands, remove invasive species, and improve farm productivity with nature-based solutions.

Story

I’ve been invited to speak at a conference in Zurich, and as I’ve been flight free for years I of course offered to cycle there from the UK. I’ve just got to Dover and am taking a ferry to Calais.

Protect Earth has kept me so busy lately that I now only have 4.5 days to cycle the almost 500 miles, and I’ll need your help to motivate me to make it the whole way.

When I get there I’ll be talking to a bunch of techies about the sort of tech Protect Earth use to increasing funding for our reforestation and rewilding work, and I’ll be trying to inspire more people to care about green tech (keeping the carbon footprint of software to a minimum with creative techniques that track the carbon intensity of software and run it and different times when more renewables are on is on the grid, or in cleaner locations).

What will Protect Earth do with the money?

Right now Protect Earth are looking for a project manager who will be able to massively scale the number and size of projects each year. Protect Earth planted 100,000 trees in three years and now it’s looking like at least 100,000 this year along, possibly substantially more with the help of a PM who will then free up Steve the Ecologist to do more ecology.
