It's bewildering and unsettling for anyone going into hospital but especially for children and that is why we are a fundraising hospital. We raise funds to enhance the experience of our patients by providing state of the art medical equipment and facilities and creating a child-friendly environment.

Story

Everyone has a drive when running a marathon for charity....this is mine. This is our little girl on Paediatric Intensive Care at 3 weeks old. She caught a cold which turned into Bronchiolitis, she was rushed into A&E in Derby where she was having apnea (episodes of stopping breathing).

The next 24 hours she continued to slip away from us, and she was ventilated and sent by specialist ambulance service Comet to Leicester Royal. After trying to withdraw her from the vent, a few days later she failed and was clinically no longer with us, but the doctors battled to save her, eventually they managed to stabilise her and re intubate her on the vent. Her body was limp and battered and she had multiple collapsed lungs, fluid shifting from one area to another. Each day was utter hell to go through for me and Laura watching our baby girl go through this. We felt helpless.

After 2 solid weeks the consultant came to us and said that she's not getting worse....but also not getting better while on the vent, and the only way to find out is to extubate her. But this was the last time. She would sink or swim.

It was also our eldest child's Birthday, so we had to apologise to him that we couldn't be there while we were by her side. However perhaps this was the good omen we needed, after a wobbly 24hrs she started to stabilise, and bit by bit started breathing better and more stable. After a week off the ventilator we were sent home. Although there had been a snow storm so we weren't sure we could actually drive back due to the roads 🙈. But we managed, and arrived home safely after the most traumatic 3 weeks of our lives.
