Bernadette was my mum, she was incredible. I know now that we would have been considered living in poverty when we were children, but that is not how I remember it. My mother filled my life with memories, parks, picnics, boxes of clothes we had the freedom to cut up and make into grand outfits which I would proudly go out in! When the Courtney Foundation first launched the Luton Clothing Bank, it triggered a wonderful memory taking me back to my childhood, like many others my mum put us first when it came to food, clothes and many other things. She never bought clothes for herself, a couple of times a year a friend of my Nan’s would send a big bag of clothes for my mum. This was always exciting and my mum looked forward to receiving these. My mum particularly loved blouses with frills and there were always a few included. This kindness was lovingly received and I remember the joy on my mum’s face as she looked through the bag.Over 50 years later I am lucky to be able to afford to buy my clothes and I love to buy a blouse with frills! I do not know who the kind lady was, but I do remember my mum’s smiling proud face when she wore her preloved clothes and I love that I still enjoy wearing her style to this day.
