Peaks and Pedals to the Palace

James Badger is raising money for Blood Cancer UK

Team: Team Badger BloodCancerUK

In memory of Philippa

Peaks and Pedals to the Palace · 22 April 2026

We're dedicated to beating blood cancer. We fund research and support those affected. Since 1960, we've invested over £500 million in blood cancer research, transforming treatments and saving lives. The day we beat blood cancer is now in sight and our researchers are determined to finish the job.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

My wife Philippa was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (a Blood Cancer) on 20th April 2022 and very sadly died on 22nd April 2022 while being treated with Chemotherapy at St James’s Hospital in Leeds. Leaving three young children aged 12, 10 and 6.

We are raising funds for research into treatments of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. Currently the survival rate for the type of Blood Cancer that Philippa had is just 10%. Research can made a real difference, through the work of BloodCancerUK the survival rates for childhood Leukaemia has improved from just 10% to over 85%. We want to support the same for Acute Myeloid Leukaemia.

In April 2023 to mark the first anniversary of Philippa’s death I cycled 1,600kms from Land’s End to John OGrouts in just 8 days. 200kms a day, 2000m of climbing and around 12 hours of cycling every day for 8 days in a row.

I was supported all the way by three friends on bikes (Richard Baldwin, Adam Ellis and Anthony Frazer) and Miles Foster in the support vehicle.

In May 2024 with Richard and Adam I cycled to the top of Mount Everest (at least the same elevation of 29,000ft) up the same hill past the churchyard, where Philippa is buried, 90 times. We started at 3am and finished just after 1am the following day but supported by so many friends and family.

In April 2025 I ran the London Marathon, but to make it a bit more challenging I cycled over 500km from St James’ church Birstwith to St James' London on a 42 year old tandem bike (Philippa was 42 when she died).

In April 2026, with my amazing friends I will attempt the hardest challenge yet….Peaks and Pedals to the Palace. This is a triple challenge in more ways than one! We will start by completing the National Three Peaks Challenge in less than a day, we will then jump on our bikes and cycle from Mount Snowdon to Buckingham Palace and then run the London Marathon…..!!

A 3 year fully funded research programme will cost £300,000. With the first three challenges we have enabled BloodCancerUK to fully fund a specific research project into Acute Myeloid Leukaemia at Cardiff University. We are now working towards further research at York University.
