The unit provides acute specialist care to a population of approximately three million people across the South Coast, the Isle of Wight and Channel Islands, for a variety of neurological conditions, including; brain tumour, brain injury, stroke, brain haemorrhage, epilepsy, motor neurone disease and dementia. Our appeals ensure that the Wessex Neurological Centre is equipped with the very best technology and facilities available, to enhance the range and quality of patient care and to also sponsor pioneering research into new treatments.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I’m going to be running the Dorney Lake 10km on Sunday 9th November in memory of my Grandad, Bill Hiscock, who we suddenly lost at the beginning of this year.

My Grandad meant a lot to Sean as well, so he’ll also be running the race, all donations will go through this page to keep it simple.

On 22nd January 2025 Grandad was admitted to the Wessex Neurological Centre at Southampton Hospital. He had experienced a sudden bleed on the brain and needed to be admitted to ICU and undergo surgery to drain the fluid from his brain. Over the next weeks it was a turbulent journey with Grandad showing improvement for the first week and then a rocky road after the drain was removed. Ultimately an infection had made its way into Grandad’s brain and he passed on the 15th February in the early hours.

Beyond anything else I’m forever grateful for the flexibility the nurses and doctors allowed us in being with Grandad as much as possible during those weeks. This time means more to us than I could possibly put into words.

The work this centre does deserves every penny we can raise for them. 10k is a massive challenge for me after a long journey back into running. So please donate any amount you are able to in support of an important charity, and in honour of my Grandad.

Grandad was an incredible man who kept himself fit and active, loved to travel, and would get on with anyone he met. I’ve always been so proud talking about how he grabbed life by the horns and did what he wanted. He’s an inspiration to us all on how to live our lives.
