Bake Sale · 23 April 2024

We work to tackle the broken food system and climate change, promote the urban croft model and improve community wellbeing through food growing, outdoor activities, events, workshops and education.

Story

Thank you for taking part in our Earth Day bake sale. We are donating the proceeds to Edinburgh-based charity, Earth in Common. Earth in Common started as a grassroots movement under the name Leith Community Crops in Pots. Founder, Evie Murray, wanted to give children a healthy outdoor experience in a crowded urban environment.

The charity has now developed to be able to offer some fantastic initiatives, including:

• 'Edible Schoolyards' around Leith. Their Nurture Children project ('Green-Learning') enabled the charity to offer the benefits of their Edible Schoolyards to local primary school children aged 8-12 who were affected by issues such as anxiety, suspected ADHD, traumatic bereavement and substance-abusing parents.

• Edinburgh Council has appointed them to manage two acres of common good land at the northern tip of Leith Links, now known as Leith Community Croft, where they encourage 'green' food production, a sharing ethos, nature play and the provision of wildlife habitat.

• The Croft Carbon College - this offers environmental education for youth and adults in Leith and beyond. The aim is to equip people with the skills, knowledge and confidence to live a life that's better for the planet.
