Story

Trail running, with the freedom that the beautiful lakeland fells on our doorstep and the grounding of the variable Cumbrian weather, has supported my physical and mental health through a very difficult 18 months. In a moment of insanity (or feeling of invincibility) that was encouraged by a few close 'friends' I entered the ballot for the Lakeland 50 ... a challenge involving running/walking 50 miles (from Dalemain to Coniston) and 3000m of elevation within a time cut off of 24 hours. Now the event is only 6 weeks away and my naive optimism for this being a 'jolly day out' is still present, although doubts do creep in!

Vetlife is a charity that offer amazing support to the veterinary profession. Having been a long term supporter and advised various colleagues over the years to seek their support I really didn't envisage myself calling them. However, when it felt like our family had been shattered in September 2024 and Neil and I tried to find ways to support each other and Charlotte I had cause to phone them twice. Two particularly dark moments in which the volunteer calmly and non-judgementally listened and helped me see some light, that the overwhelm was normal and ok in the circumstances and that as an individual and a family we would be strong enough to find a path different to that we had maybe planned out and hoped for but one that would have (and already has) many positives and joyous moments.

As pain and exhaustion set in and I have to find the grit and determination to complete this challenge the knowledge of the support of my friends and family and that money I raise will make a real difference to a service that is so valuable to those struggling with their mental health ... or just the challenges of life will hopefully focus me to continue to the finish line in Coniston.
