Story

Jiu Jitsu Fundraiser in aid of research into late onset retinal degeneration (LORD)

I'm raising £1,000 to help further late onset retinal degeneration (LORD) research.

Inherited retinal disease is now the most common cause of registerable blindness in the developed world. Loss of vision poses a major challenge - both on an emotional and practical level - and has a profound life-long effect on lifestyle and employment opportunities.

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh have identified a likely gene in LORD that causes the disease to develop, meaning that they may be able to understand the development of such diseases by studying them at a cellular and microbiological level. Having a genetic model may also lead to the development of cells and models that can be used for clinical trials or gene editing therapies.

As LORD impacts a number of my close family members, I have challenged myself to raise £1,000 through my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training event on Saturday 15th March 2025.
