2026 will mark 25 years since my dad died from cancer, aged 53. I wanted to honour him with a challenge and raise money and awareness in his memory, so I planned to run 25 marathons in 25 days.
When I was planning this challenge, one of my best friends of over 30 years, David Barnett, was diagnosed with brain cancer and sadly died in November 2024, aged 49. To honour Dave, I’ve added an extra marathon, so I’ll be running 26 marathons in 26 days (Not Consecutively) including The Manchester Marathon on April 19th and finishing on June 17th the date my dad died in 2001.
I decided to call this The Power of Hope Challenge.
For me, when all is against you, the Power of Hope can make you stronger — and that’s exactly what I saw with both my dad and Dave. It’s about how hope fuels resilience, helping people keep moving, healing, or striving toward something positive, even when logic or evidence might suggest giving up.
I’m raising funds for The Christie Hospital, a charity very close to my heart. My dad was treated there for almost three years, and I went with him to every chemotherapy appointment. Spending that time at the hospital, you witness the incredible work the staff do and the courage of the patients.
My dad and Dave’s bravery in fighting cancer is what inspires me to take on this challenge. They were two of the strongest and bravest men I’ve ever known. Watching them face cancer, fighting like warriors, doing things I didn’t think were humanly possible, is what drives me to run this challenge.
I want to raise as much awareness as possible about the challenges people face with cancer and raise as much money as possible, with the hope that one day we will find a cure for this terrible disease that affects so many people every day.
