Ever thought that the notion of participating in elite sport had passed you by, that the opportunity to take on the best sportsmen in the world was just a pipe dream? Well, for a group of Enniskillen folk at this year’s Enniskillen 10Km on June 14th, that dream might just become a reality.

After becoming disillusioned with mid-life fitness mediocrity, the plucky group have dreamt up an innovative way to make the Enniskillen 10km just a little bit more interesting. At this year’s race, the entrants will also compete for the coveted ‘pound for pound’ title amongst themselves. This concept is largely based on the notion that lighter athletes have a major advantage over heavier athletes so for every half stone of extra weight carried each participant will receive a 2 minute handicap, thus creating a more level playing field.

The idea is the brain child of Adam, a former international athlete, who once claimed that 'pound for pound' he was a far better runner than Mo Farah based on the assumption that Mo was almost half his weight. Therefore Mo would have to run twice as fast to claim he was a better athlete pound for pound (rumours of Mo accepting the challenge this year are just that!).

As well as facing a public weigh-in ahead of the race, all entrants in the pound for pound challenge are raising funds for Home-Start, one of the leading family support charities. Home-Start Lakeland volunteers help families in Fermanagh with young children deal with the challenges they face on a day-to-day basis. Issues faced by families include post-natal depression, poor mental health, disability, isolation, low household income. Volunteers visit families in their own homes for 2-3 hours per week offering support, friendship and practical help. This help, in turn, allows the parents to give their children a better start at home.
