Ever wondered if you missed the boat on elite sports, thinking the chance to race the world's best was just a fantasy? Well, a quirky group of Enniskillen ex-pats and hangers-on might just prove you wrong at this year’s Enniskillen 10Km on June 13th.
Fed up with the usual mid-life fitness rut, these spirited individuals have cooked up a hilarious new twist to spice up the race. This year, participants will compete for the coveted ‘pound for pound’ title, based on the idea that lighter runners have a big advantage. For every half stone of extra weight, runners will get a 2-minute handicap, levelling the playing field—think of it as a race where your weight might just be your secret weapon or your comedic downfall.
The concept was dreamed up by Adam, a former international athlete who once boldly claimed he was a better runner than Mo Farah—pound for pound—because Mo was nearly twice his weight. Rumour has it, Mo might be considering accepting the challenge this year, but only if he can bring his own scales and a sense of humour.
All participants will face a public weigh-in before the race, adding a dash of drama and potential comic relief.
Beyond the fun, the event supports Home-Start Lakeland, a charity helping families in Fermanagh. Volunteers from Home-Start visit families with young children, offering support for issues like post-natal depression, mental health struggles, disabilities, isolation, and low income. They spend 2-3 hours weekly in families’ homes, providing friendship, practical help, and maybe a few laughs along the way. This support helps parents give their children a better start, proving that sometimes, a little help and a lot of heart can make all the difference.
