Story
Pregnancy associated acute kidney injury (PrAKI) is a silent emergency that kills thousands of women and babies every year - yet it is almost entirely preventable. It is often not recognised, diagnosed, or treated in time.

Globally, the risk of dying in pregnancy is about nine times higher for women who develop AKI.
In low- and middle-income countries, PrAKI affects around 91 in every 10,000 pregnancies. That means in some parts of Africa, nearly 1 in 40 pregnancies is complicated by AKI. Around 1 in 10 women die, and 1 in 3 babies are lost.
But even here in the UK, we’re not immune. The incidence has risen from 3 per 10,000 pregnancies in the early 2000s to 11 per 10,000 today which is 3-4% of pregnancies. And Black and Asian women are at highest risk, with inequalities that urgently need addressing. Women have a 4-5x increased risk of dying compared to someone without a PrAKI
We’re building the first global PrAKI Consortium and Academy to change that. The aim of the Consortium is to become an established global network, who work collaboratively to improve the prevention, identification and management of PrAKI through research and education
With your support, we can stop women dying from a condition we already know how to prevent. Your donation will help:
- Pay for global research on PrAKI prevention and management
- Pay for us to develop free education resources for birth workers and health professionals
- Develop new tests and treatments for PrAKI
