The Mouth Cancer Foundation is a charity dedicated to helping and supporting those suffering from or at risk of mouth cancer, throat cancer and other head and neck cancers, as well as providing assistance and information on living with mouth cancer for families, friends and carers.

Story

I’m swimming 100km this November to raise awareness, and hopefully some donations, for oral cancer.

Raising awareness for this cause is something that is very close to my heart, I have witnessed first hand how it affects a person, a friend, a loved one or even a stranger you pass in the street.

My Pops and Uncle have both had their own experiences with mouth cancer and I have seen how this has affected them, their lives and my family and friends supporting them, and if I can help spread some awareness of signs and symptoms that might help someone else it would be great!

As a dental nurse, I’ve seen how many people are diagnosed and referred for oral cancer every week. It’s easy to dismiss a symptom or delay a check-up, but visiting your dentist even once a year could save your life, I’ve seen it happen! Oral cancer being caught early has an 86% survival rate, being caught late is often fatal. So I know the dentist can be a daunting place, but it’s worth it!

Oral cancer doesn’t only affect people who smoke, vape, drink, or spend too much time in the sun. It’s not a cliché, it can happen to anyone.

I completely understand that donating isn’t always possible. I’ve seen so many fundraising pages and wished I could help them all. But this isn’t just about raising money, sharing this post also helps raise awareness and reminds others how important it is to get checked, no matter how small or insignificant something might seem. Many of us are guilty of putting our health last and assuming things will “get better on their own,” but it’s always better to be safe.

If you take nothing else from this, please just click the link below to learn about the signs and symptoms of oral cancer, that alone would make me very happy! 💙

I’ll be recording all my swims on my watch, so you can follow along!

Thank you so much for your time and support.
