Princess’ Leg Surgery and CT Scan

Dedicated to finding safe and loving homes in the UK and Ireland for dogs rescued from the most horrific of scenarios including slaughterhouses, meat trucks and medical testing facilities. We also aim to provide advanced veterinary care for our rescue dogs in foster homes using leading specialists.

Story

Princess Thora came into our care as a stray when the amazing girls at pets lost and found Fermanagh where altered to her straying in a very rural location in Fermanagh. It took 4 days to dedication from this amazing team for them to finally trap her and her sister Levina. They where both named after thunder and lighting as the girls where in a storm straying.

They reached out to LCDR to see if they had any space in foster for Levina and Princess Thora. After initally spending a few weeks together in foster. Levina went to a separate foster to continue building confidence. It became evident that Princess Thora though had some quite complex injuries needing specialist intervention.

After extensive X-rays with the orthopaedic specialist at Cedarmount veterinary clinic it became apparent at Princess Thora was a very complex case. Which even went beyond the expertise of our amazing veterinary team. So she was referred to Northern Ireland veterinary specialists at Cromyln House. And she has a comprehensive review of her case. It’s believed she’s either sustained responsible force such as a car hitting her at one point, that the orthopaedic issues could be all congenital or it’s a mixture of both.

Her front left elbow doesn’t sit correctly in it’s socket and one of the bones in her leg has stopped growing prematurely causing her paw to rotate. This is her main issue as it causes her the greatest amount of pain after short exercise and limits what she can do. Her right hip is also dislocated and the ball joint sits up past her pelvis; even though this is quite extreme it’s currently not causing her big issues.

So the current plan is she needs a CT scan of the front legs and hip. This will be to guide Surgery which will have to occur a few weeks after the CT scan on the front leg as this is causing most issues. The surgery will not completely fix her leg. But the aim is to reduce pain and increase functionality and therefore quality of life. We will review her hip down the line if and when it starts to cause issues.

CT scan estimate: £2000

Surgery on front leg only estimate: £2000-3000

In the unlikely event that the CT scan guides us to a non surgical option the funds raised for the surgery will be used for her hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and pain management. But we must have the full £5000 raised before she can have the CT scan as this scan will guide the surgery of going ahead and we have a small window after the scan the surgery can be done.
