In Memory of Professor Chris Wickham

Thomas Kay is raising money for University of Birmingham
In memory of Professor Chris Wickham
The University of Birmingham is committed to finding solutions to global challenges, including cancer, global infection and the development of our future leaders. As one of the broadest reaching charities in the UK, we are tackling issues that affect us all.

Story

Professor Chris Wickham died on Friday 9th October.

Chris joined the University of Birmingham in 1977, beginning a long academic career that established him as the leading authority on medieval European history. From 2005 to 2016, he held the Chichele Professorship of Medieval History at Oxford. His work emphasized and compared economic structures, social relationships and the experiences of ordinary people in Italy and the wider Mediterranean. His multiple books and his teaching have inspired generations of scholars.

Family and friends of Chris have established a fund in his memory to support PhD scholarships in the social history or material culture of Byzantine Studies (preferably) or early medieval history at the University of Birmingham. All donations will be matched to double the value of your gift and raise funds to support study in an area that Chris was passionate about.
