The neuro-rehabilitation unit at Rookwood Hospital provides rehabilitation for people who have suffered brain injuries. The severity of this type of injury means that patients are often in hospital for many months.

Story

In October 2023, Ryan’s Mum Beth, suddenly fell seriously ill. She was rushed to hospital and by the following day, had been transferred to The Harefield specialist heart hospital in London. There, she suffered a devastating heart attack and had to be resuscitated. Beth was placed on ECMO life support and sedated. For weeks we stood by her side, not knowing what the future would hold.

Thanks to the incredible medical team and the life-saving ECMO machine, Beth pulled through but not without further challenges. She suffered a stroke, which caused a bleed on the brain. Despite everything, our brave Beth kept fighting. She was moved to the ICU at the Grange Hospital, Newport and then on to the rehabilitation centre at Llandough Hospital in Cardiff.

At Llandough, Beth underwent intensive physiotherapy and occupational therapy. She worked hard every day and although she is no longer able to verbally communicate with us, we’re all able to communicate with her in our own little ways.

Beth is truly strong, determined and full of life. We’re so proud of how far she’s come and so grateful to the team at Llandough Hospital who have helped massively in her recovery.

The Prop Appeal is for patients in the regional Neurosciences and Spinal Rehabilitation Unit, currently based at University Hospital Llandough. It has been set up to help improve the experience of patients and their families during rehabilitation.

From generous donations we have been able to re-vamp the day-room into a more homely environment, upgrade the kitchen where patients are able to relearn cooking and other domestic skills, and upgrade a chalet which reproduces surroundings at home to help patients readjust before being discharged. Every £1 you can donate will go directly to the charity.

We’re now raising money for the Prop Appeal at Llandough as a thank you for everything they’ve done to support Beth’s recovery. Every donation will go towards helping others like her, to receive the life-changing care they need.

Three of the South Wales Lions:

Ryan “Are we there yet?” Emmanuel

Mark 'Cavendish' Wyatt,

Andrew 'Can I use an e-bike?” Pearce

are cycling 120 miles from Cwmbran to Villa Park in Birmingham in September 2025.

We cycle in memory of Simon Pearce, and in support of Ryan's mum Beth and her family, who have been helped by this charity.

Thank you so much for your support 💛
