Matt is a 36 year old father of three living in the North West of England. He was a truck driver and enjoys watching football and spending time with his young children.

Twelve months ago, Matt caught a cold, lost his voice, and six weeks later still hadn’t recovered. He went to a walk-in centre for antibiotics, but when his voice didn’t return, blood tests were done immediately—and doctors realised something was seriously wrong.

Matt was rushed to A&E, where they discovered blood clots in both lungs, his hip, and a DVT in his thigh. Scans also revealed enlarged lymph nodes, an enlarged spleen, and damage to his liver.

After months of tests and uncertainty, Matt was diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC)—a rare autoimmune liver disease that affects only about 7 in every 100,000 people in the UK. PSC causes progressive scarring of the bile ducts and, over time, leads to liver failure. The only known treatment is a liver transplant.

While we don’t yet know how far away Matt is from needing a transplant, we are determined to use this time to raise awareness of PSC and fund vital research to bring us closer to a cure.

PSC Support is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by this disease. There is currently no cure or medical treatment, making support and research absolutely critical.
