• Poor sanitation practices like defecation and improper waste disposal contribute to the contamination of open water sources
• This year, Malawi has had Cholera outbreaks outside the usual rainy season. (Total deaths at 282 as of November 23rd,2022)
• It is suggested that the situation may worsen during the rainy season considering the usual epidemiology of the disease
• International Organisations are now recognizing the cholera outbreak in Malawi as an issue
• 400 underprivileged families in the two most affected districts of Nkhatabay and Nkhotakota (200 families in each district)
• A total of 6 communities (3 in each district)
• For Nkhatabay, the main target is Tukombo area which is believed to be the origin of the disease which spread to the rest of the district and neighboring Nkhotakota district.
• Nkhatabay has a total of 1560 cases (as of December 4, 2022)
• Nkhotakota has a total of 1141 cases (as of December 4, 2022). The main target area is Dwambazi area which has the majority of cholera cases in the district.
To help control the further spread of the cholera outbreak in Malawi, QS World Merit Malawi would like to intervene and reduce the burden of this cholera outbreak before the rainy season begins.
Our solutions are mainly targeting
• The provision of water treatment facilities to families in the target areas,
• Health awareness campaigns to enhance behavior change and improve on community hygiene and
• Establishing a vibrant community health committee that can help in the reporting of suspected cholera cases to health authorities for immediate response. These community health committees shall be provided with mobile phones and airtime credit.
