Story
I am running the 2023 Great North Run because I want to defeat meningitis and septicaemia wherever they exist.
My personal experience…
I was a young mum, having my first son aged just 17.
At 2 months old he contracted Streptococcal meningitis, I took him to the doctors that day I knew he was unwell, but was told take him home and bath, bottle and put him to bed!
Against my better instincts and feeling judged for being a teen mum I went home and put my baby to bed. I woke up for the night feed to find my baby limp with a bulging soft spot on his head and shrieking in pain when the light was turned on.
Immediately taking him to A&E I was told if I had waited 30mins - to 1 hour later there would of been nothing they could have done to save him!
He was hospitalised for weeks having numerous lumbar punctures and painful procedures. As a scared, new mother I was beside myself not knowing what would happen from one hour to the next it was really touch and go!
I don't have any pictures of that time and never went back to say thank you once we were discharged - I genuinely think I had PTSD and couldn't face going back into the hospital environment.
This is a full circle moment as my som will be 18 this year. I am so grateful for his life and the happiness that he's brought me and everyone that knows and loves him.
To show gratitude for the research and staff that saved my sons life l'm raising money by running this race!
I'm a big believer in karma and need to give back to support the cause that saved him and is still doing incredible work every day to save more lives.
I’m nervous and scared of the road ahead as it’s a HUGE challenge for me but this is the race of my life. Except I’m not running for my life, I’m running to give thanks for his!
Any Donation is gratefully received. Thank you.
