Story
Later this year, I’ll be attempting to hike the Yorkshire Three Peaks. A 24 mile trail up and down 3 mountains, over the space of 12 hours.
Last year at 26 weeks pregnant, I was diagnosed with preeclampsia and became very unwell. Preeclampsia is a serious, pregnancy-related condition characterised by high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ system, most commonly and in my case, the kidney's. It also stops the placenta from doing its job effectively and can very often restrict growth and also result in having a premature baby. In the very worst cases, it is the cause of death for many mothers and babies. It’s only known “cure” is delivery, however complications often follow and for myself I am now on medication for life.
After this diagnosis, a very difficult end to my pregnancy followed. I was in and out of hospital 2-3 times a week, and it all culminated in the delivery of our son Freddie, born at 34+5 weeks, weighing 4lb 4oz. Freddie is thankfully thriving and has made incredible progress during his first year around the sun!
However, like many women, I was left with CB-PTSD and postpartum depression. To the rescue came Alternatives, an incredible charity based in Watford, who support families who have experienced difficult pregnancies, loss, or birth trauma. Alternatives have provided me with “pay what you can” therapy sessions that have had a huge impact on my recovery.
The most concerning thing to me about this story, is that many women are not able to access services like Alternatives in their own area. Originally I was due to give birth at Princess Alexandra in Harlow, however I was transported to Watford at the last minute due issues with NICU space. Had I given birth in Harlow as planned, there would be no counselling on offer for me, despite my perinatal psychologist diagnosing me with PTSD.
Approximately 1 in 5 women experience birth trauma in the UK, and very little support is offered to those in difficulty, with many being directed to paid services, which on Mat pay is not accessible. Charities like Alternatives provide a lifeline for those women and this trek is my way of giving back to them for all they have done for me.
Please consider a small donation to support the journey.
And if you’d like to know more of the story, I have a piece published on Medium, here. https://lp90.medium.com/may-is-pre-eclampsia-awareness-month-4695d00f6018
Thank you so much.
