Down Syndrome UK (DSUK) is a national charity passionate about empowering parents and professionals to improve the lives of those with Down syndrome and their families in the UK.

Story

For the past 17 years, my Mam and Dad have been respite foster carers for the incredible Together for Children in Sunderland, opening their hearts and home to children who need support the most.

Over the years, they have cared for a number of children with Down syndrome, and honestly, they are some of the loveliest people I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing. One little girl in particular has become such a special part of our lives. She’s like a daughter to my Mam and Dad, and a sister to me and my sister. We love her so much.

At the beginning of this year, I set myself a goal to do something meaningful to support people with Down syndrome and their families. So, I’ve decided to challenge myself by getting fit again and returning to running.

I was literally a non-runner when I set this goal. Since then, I've invested in proper running trainers, signed up to a Runna training plan, and committed to doing Park Run every Saturday morning. What started as an idea has quickly become a real commitment and, if you know me, you'll know I don't do things by halves. Safe to say, I've become slightly obsessed already!

In 25 weeks’ time, I’ll be taking on the Sunderland 10K with the goal of finishing in under one hour. It’s going to take a lot of hard work, training and determination, but knowing I’m doing it for such an amazing cause will keep me motivated every step of the way.

I'm also on the lookout for fellow runners, running buddies, and Strava friends to help keep me accountable along the way. If you're on Strava, I'd love some new connections and a few much-needed kudos as I work towards the start line!

Any donation, no matter how small, would mean the world to me and will help support people with Down syndrome and their families. If you're unable to donate, sharing this page would be hugely appreciated too.

Thank you so much for your kindness and support!
