Our beautiful boy, Rafael Andres Rojas, was born on the 2nd January 2026 under extremely challenging circumstances. Rafael sadly suffered from HIE shortly before being born. He was born at Northampton General Hospital before being transferred to the Coventry NICU for specialised treatment, in a desperate attempt to save his life and prevent any further damage.

Despite their best efforts, Rafael’s brain injuries were too severe and he passed away on the 17th January 2026.

We spent several days at the NICU in Coventry, and all the staff there went above and beyond to care for Rafael and support us during an impossibly difficult time. Every single member of staff we spoke to was incredibly compassionate and kind — whether they were a doctor, nurse, midwife, or support staff member.

I had already signed up for the Brighton Half Marathon several months ago, and we had been looking forward to this trip as our first time away as a family of four. After everything we’ve been through, I decided I wanted to raise funds to donate to the NICU who looked after and supported us so brilliantly. I will be running the Brighton Half Marathon on the 1st March 2026 in memory of Rafael.

These donations will help towards making things better for staff, patients, and families on the Neonatal Unit at University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire.

This is the first time I’ve ever tried to raise money for a cause, and I know that everyone is facing challenges right now. We’re truly grateful to anyone who takes the time to read, share, or donate. If you are able to give, even a small amount, it would mean the world to our family.
