5,416 Metres for Hospitality - Giving Back to the Industry That Gave Me So Much

Rafael Bejerano is raising money for Hospitality Action

Trek in Himalayas

Behind their smiles and slick service hospitality workers can fall upon hard times just like anybody else. Ours is a stressful industry, with long hours, high pressure environments and physically demanding work. We are here to offer financial, physical and psychological support to those who need it.

Story

In October, just a few months before my 50th birthday, I'll be taking on one of the world's most iconic trekking adventures – the 18-day Annapurna Circuit in Nepal.

The trek will take me to Thorong La Pass at 5,416 metres (17,769 ft), over 200 metres higher than Everest Base Camp. I’ll be facing high altitude, freezing temperatures, toilets with better views than most five-star hotels, and considerably less oxygen than I’d ideally like!

Twenty-five years ago, in 2001, I was lucky enough to visit Everest Base Camp. What stayed with me wasn’t just the breathtaking scenery, but the warmth of the Nepalese people and the incredible sense of peace I found in the Himalayas. I’ve wanted to return ever since.

As I approach 50, this challenge is about more than reaching a mountain pass. It’s about pushing myself beyond my comfort zone, switching off from everyday hotel life and hoping reaching Thorong La Pass is less stressful than watching my beloved Spurs.

Most importantly, I’m hoping this journey can make a real difference by raising £10,000 for Hospitality Action.

Hospitality Action provides financial, emotional and practical support to hospitality professionals and their families when they’re facing hardship, illness or crisis. Every day, our industry looks after others. Sometimes, the people who care for us need someone to care for them.

Many of us are fortunate enough to be in a position where we can help. If you're able to support this challenge, your donation, whatever the amount, will directly help people who genuinely need it, offering hope, opportunity and support when it's needed most.

If you've ever enjoyed a memorable hotel stay, celebrated a special occasion in a restaurant, or simply appreciated great hospitality, this is an opportunity to give something back to the people who have found themselves in serious need.

Every step I take through the Himalayas is for someone who needs a helping hand. If you’re able to support me, whatever the amount, I’d be incredibly grateful. Your donation won’t just motivate my journey to the finish line, it will help change lives.

Thank you for your support, your generosity and for helping make every step count.
