85km Walk

The RAF has shaped our nation and our society. It has influenced how we live our lives today through its impact on world events, society and technology. Our purpose is to share the story of the RAF, and its people – using the stories in our collections to engage, inspire and encourage learning.

Story

The RAF Spitfires will be walking 85km (53 miles) in September to mark 85 years since the skies above southern England became the stage for one of the most pivotal battles in British history — the Battle of Britain.

On 18 June 1940, Winston Churchill delivered his iconic ‘Finest Hour’ speech, foreseeing the challenge ahead:

“…the Battle of France is over. I expect that the Battle of Britain is about to begin.”

That summer and autumn, RAF Fighter Command — flying legendary aircraft like the Spitfire and Hurricane — stood firm against the Luftwaffe. Supported by a vast network of ground crew, these brave individuals helped secure a critical victory that forced Hitler to abandon his invasion plans.

Please support us if you can in our efforts to walk 85km to raise money on behalf of the RAF Museum.
