Northumberland Coast Mighty Hike 2024 - half marathon · 15 September 2024 ·

In September 2024, we are hiking a full or half marathon along the beautiful beaches and fishing villages of the Northumberland Coast to raise vital funds for people affected by cancer.

Story

In September 2024, I and my trusty Ramblers of Rohan are taking on a Mighty Hike along the beautiful Northumberland coastline to raise money for people living with cancer who rely upon the superstars at Macmillan. It's a half marathon and I'm crossing everything I'll be able to make it the whole way despite my illness - if not I know my amazing friends and colleagues will make the finish line, all of whom are walking not just for me but for all their family members or friends that have called upon the support of this incredible charity or been stolen away by this dreadful disease. They are: Sandra Mackenzie, Leanne Johnson, Kate Hayes, Eva Reed and my husband, Matt Thompson, without whom I would have collapsed in a heap a long time ago now. If you don't know me well, I'm living with terminal breast cancer as of November 2024 after an initial primary diagnosis in March 2022. My unwelcome hitchhiker is currently in my bones, muscle, skin, liver and soft tissue and I'm currently on new chemotherapy after recent progression in all areas. I wouldn't be here at all were if not for the care of my incredible team, many of them funded by Macmillan. They are like a kind of family to me now.

We have pledged to raise £1000 and would appreciate any support in reaching this. By reaching this pledge, we could pay for a Macmillan Support Worker for eight days who could provide emotional, practical and financial advice to someone affected by cancer. They've helped me navigate benefit applications, understand what to do with my mortgage, and begin to deal with the heartache of childlessness. They've given countless hugs, sat by hospital bedsides while I vomit or lie there delirious...trust me, these people keep you sane, grounded and smiling, at least the majority of the time. They are the best of us.
