Story
My story: Who am I?
I am many things. I am a British Muslim, a mother, primary school teacher, approved SGO and founder of ‘DUA’.
All my life experiences have lead me here. They’ve truly humbled me, made me independent, brave and compassionate.
My work experience: Working as a teacher, I have had first-hand experience in dealing with young children from all walks of life, abilities and backgrounds. However, it was in June 2014 when I had the opportunity to work with several orphanages in Morocco that really stirred something in me. This was my first time witnessing the conditions and lives of destitute, underprivileged children – some were very young and fighting deadly diseases such as leukaemia. This struck something in me and I knew in that moment that this is where I needed to be. At the forefront of these children’s lives, helping in any way I could.
Since then, it has been my mission to promote the welfare of underprivileged children and families. According to a WHO and UNICEF report, a child dies from malnutrition every 2 seconds. These are statistics we cannot ignore. Being a believer of faith, self-reflection is important and I am trying to make a difference for others – to the best of my ability. For I do not want to be told one day 'O' son of Adam, I was hungry and you did not feed me…’ (Sahih Muslim).
Becoming an Orphan Myself:
It was when both my own parents passed away that my empathy deepened towards children. I couldn’t imagine a young child having to bear the weight of such pain when I myself found it so hard as an adult; to deal with the loss of my parents. Being so young and impoverished leads to unimaginable adversities and I knew that this was the time to take the next step.
DUA: With great effort and time, we DUA (Distributing Universal Aid), humble and noble volunteers made a bold choice and put together a charity, focusing on orphans and single parents alongside other charitable causes; in the hopes of bringing relief and some comfort to the lives of the underprivileged in third world countries.
By the grace of Allah SWT, DUA has already established several relief projects and with your help, we aim to do more. Insha'Allah!
