Story
In August 2024 our Dad aged 55 had a large Stroke. When he was in resus we were told the next 72 hours were critical and it was likely Dad would have another large bleed and die.
Remarkably, Dad was treated successfully and went on to spend the next 6 months of his life learning to feed, wash and walk again.
The impact of the stroke was awful for us all to see but most of all for Dad to live with. He found accepting his life had been changed forever impossible to come to terms with and on February 25th 2025 he chose to take his own life.
Dads stroke was so devastating, he couldn't see a way out. This will stay with us forever.
Dad often said he was completely unaware how life changing a stroke could be.
The independence, ability to interact, memory and appearance are stolen from stroke victims in an instant. Many stroke survivors go onto develop dementia. There is no cure or end date to this reality.
There are 1.3million stroke survivors in the country. Stroke survivors are 73% more likely to commit suicide and 63% more risk of dying by suicide.
Sadly 8% of all stroke patients commit suicide within their first year of recovery.
In memory of Dad, and to raise awareness of Stroke Association, some of his children will be taking on a 10k feet skydive.
All funds will go to the Stroke Association to support those affected and their families.
All support is very much appreciated.
We would love it if as many people as possible take the time to research stroke prevention after reading Dads story.
