Hi and Thank You for visiting my page! I'm fundraising for the Royal British Legion.
Reddam House CCF Charity Event for the Royal British Legion
This year’s CCF charity event in support of the Royal British Legion will see Reddam House CCF undertake a half marathon around the school grounds — while pulling a cannon.
This challenge is inspired by the Battle of Ladysmith (1899), during the Second Boer War. The legendary story tells of the siege of the British garrison in Ladysmith, where the Royal Navy landed guns from HMS Terrible and HMS Powerful to support the British Army in the relief effort.
The Naval Brigade transported their guns over extremely difficult terrain, bringing them into action against the Boer forces. The sailors improvised by creating field gun carriages from makeshift materials, hauling two 4.7-inch (120 mm) and four 12-pounder naval guns inland — first by rail, then by oxen, and finally by hand over rough ground. One remarkable story tells of sailors carrying a 12-pounder gun for nearly two miles (3.2 km) after one of its wheels collapsed.
To honour this extraordinary feat of determination and teamwork, Reddam House CCF and staff will form two relay teams, pulling their own cannon over the half marathon distance. The event will begin following the Remembrance Parade on 11th November, with both teams aiming to complete the course within three hours.
All proceeds will go to the Royal British Legion, supporting those who have served and their families.
